Waiting for the happy movie days...

The word ‘interval’ pops up on the theatre screen and that’s the cue for the conflicts in my head - ‘Should I get something to eat? No! It’s going to cost way more than my ticket!’ Well, I’m sure most of you would be on the same boat as me.

The average cost of a movie ticket in multiplexes is around 120 rupees which is still a decent amount for the experience we get. But the cost of the snacks sold there are exorbitantly high. The most vicious part here is the frisking of any eatable at the entrance of the theatre. You’re not even allowed to carry a bar of chocolate inside the theatre. Then somehow, you’ll convince yourself to buy the regular/small popcorn tub because it costs the least i.e., 100 rupees. That’s when the annoying man at the counter would tell you that you’d get a larger tub if you pay just 10 rupees more. Most of us fall for that, don’t we! The popcorn that’s worth 30 rupees is sold for an atrociously high rate of over hundred rupees and 500ml coke which is worth 30 bucks is sold for triple the cost. If we could afford a ticket of 120 bucks, why can’t we spend a 100. Right? These multiplexes cruelly use this mentality of ours to gorge on our money.

So why does buying yourself a medium popcorn and Coke cost you twice your movie ticket? Well, maybe it’s because a major part of profit from ticket sales goes to the production companies. So, food and beverages are the possible option through which the multiplexes can boost their turnover. We can understand this from the fact that around 30 per cent of their revenues are from food and beverages. Also, they might outsource food stalls to a contractor at a very high cost and contractors in turn justify their investment through digging deep into our pockets.

Now that the Maharashtra High Court has passed an order that the food prices should be sold at regular prices and food from outside should be allowed, the movie goers can expect higher satisfaction at a lesser cost. But, will this be implemented everywhere?
